Fluker Stewart Papers

Scope and Contents

Fluker Stewart (1921-2006)  was Director of College Relations for Valdosta State College from 1966-1985. He was an integral part of the College Faculty, and kept meticulous record of all that he did. Not only did he maintain all of his correspondence from his time at Valdosta State, he also collected newspaper clippings that were college-related. His collection provides a good picture of college affairs from the late sixties to the mid-eighties.

Football

Scope and Contents The VSC/VSU Football program began in 1982, and its first coach was Jim Goodman.  Other coaches include Mike Cavan, Hal Mumme, and  Mike Kelly.  The first athlete from the VSC football team to play professional football was Jesse Tuggle.  The team is division two of the Gulf South Conference.  President Hugh Bailey brought Football to VSC early in his tenure, and has been very active in supporting it. Frances Hurn Harper Collection

Scope and Contents Frances Hurn Harper was an alumni of Georgia State Womans College who attended in the late 40s. Some of her possessions concerning the college were donated to the Valdosta State University Archives by her daughter Peggy Harper Riggins. (Company B, 1269th Combat Engineer Battalion, 6th Army Group; 44th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Brigade) He participated in the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp, April 29, 1945. The personal narratives of George Aigen are part of the Veteran's History Project (AFCX/2001/001/95454) at the Library of Congress.
